Tablets are taking the world by storm, with top-end models flying off the shelves accompanied by a bevy of accessories and apps. The best tablets are do-anything, go-anywhere devices, but there are big differences between the biggest names in tablet tech. These are five favourites.
1. Apple iPad 2 WiFi or 3G from £399*
The iPad kick-started the current tablet craze, and while the second version isn't dramatically different from the original it didn't need to be: the first iPad was a brilliant piece of technology. The second generation iPad makes some useful changes to the successful formula, though: it's thinner and lighter without compromising the iPad's good looks and all-day battery life, and a faster processor and more memory make it even smoother than before. There are two versions - Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi/3G - and you can choose between 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of storage. Twin cameras deliver HD video recording and video conferencing via Apple's FaceTime, and the range of available apps simply can't be beaten. We use ours as a newspaper, music studio, children's book library, movie player, ebook reader, catalogue shopper... if you can imagine it, there's almost certainly an app for it.
2. Sony S Tablet from £399*
Sony's first tablet uses the Google Android operating system, but Sony has worked some Sony magic on its appearance to deliver one of the best-looking tablet interfaces around. There's an iPad-sized 9.4" touchscreen, HD front and rear cameras and a powerful dual-core processor inside, and integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth make it easy to get your Sony S tablet connected. Some of its best features are only available from Sony: it's a PlayStation certified console, so you can play selected PlayStation games on your tablet, and you can use it as a remote control for your other sony kit. You can even "throw" music, video or pictures from your tablet to your Sony TV.
3. Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 from £429*
Asus does things a little bit differently, and its Transformer is no ordinary tablet: its docking station includes a keyboard and stand that turns the Transformer into a little laptop. The large 10-inch screen delivers crisp, clear colours, a dual-core processor provides plenty of horsepower, and Google's Android is attractive and easy to use. Twin cameras record HD video, there's SRS sound for dynamic 3D sound, and the 16GB of on-board storage is easily expanded to 32GB via MicroSD cards. It's the perfect machine for work and play alike: stick it in the dock when you need to work, and take it out when it's time to relax.
4. Motorola Xoom from £329*
The first premium Android tablet is even more attractive now the price has come down a bit, and at £329 for the Wi-Fi only model or £399 for the Motorola Xoom 3G you get a lot of tablet for your money. There's a powerful dual core processor running Android 3.0, the screen's a large 10-incher and the usual twin cameras are supplemented with a compass, GPS, accelerometer, magnetometer, proximity sensor, light sensor, gyroscope and even a barometer, which means the Xoom has more tools than your local B&Q. It's a typically well-made bit of Motorola kit and one of the most desirable Android tablets around, especially in its 3G incarnation.
5. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 from £399*
Samsung's tablets are very like Apple's iPads - so like them, in fact, that Apple's suing the company for - allegedly - being a little bit too inspired by Apple's designs. There are certainly some similarities: the Tab is ultra-thin and ultra-light, has a gorgeous 10-inch screen, runs a powerful dual-core processor and has twin cameras for video recording and video conferencing. Samsung has put its own user interface over the top of Google's Android operating system, and it also provides easy access to a range of entertainment services.
