There’s an App for that: Part Two

Why do we feel safe under blankets? It’s not like a murderer will come in thinking “I’m gonna ki…ahh monkeys! He’s under a blanket!” Following on from last week’s thrilling edition which introduced you to the likes of iPoo, this week we step up Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to safety. With your physical needs satisfied, your mind turns to security in several forms.

Physical Security:

I can’t in all good conscious lead you to self-defence apps in which you might hurt yourselves, or attacker alarms which might let you down during the moment. – So here’s simply a little reminder to stay safe and like a Scout, ‘Be Prepared.’

Job Security:

Finding a job with your phone could be a whole blog post in itself (hint hint nudge nudge) – but the most popular apps are JobCentre Plus app, Michael Page, Jobsite and LinkedIn which all have Droid counterparts. Your phone can help you in all areas of your job. From helping you write your CV using dictionary.com, which will save you from making such mistakes as, “Career break in 1999 to renovate my horse” and “Hobbies: enjoy cooking Chinese and Italians” to getting you up on time in the morning with Alarm Droid. To keeping you organised with CalenGoo on Android for events/meetings and Evernote for keeping up to date with those notes and voice memos. Evernote has lately branched out into other areas including my favourites: Evernote Clearly, which makes blog posts, articles and webpages clean and easy to read; and Evernote Hello, ‘remembering people is hard. Evernote Hello makes it easy by creating a rich, browsable history of individuals, encounters and shared experiences.’

Provision Security:

Gone are the days when you had to hunt and kill your own food. Which is useful as an iPhone wouldn't’t hold up well against a sabre-toothed tiger. Haven’t done your shopping or secretly can’t be bothered? Your mobile is here to save you! Order from Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Waitrose – stay well fed and topped up on hair gel without even having to boot up your PC or put clothes on.

Financial Security:

Every bank nowadays has mobile banking, an app and advice on hand to call from your mobile 24/7. Paypal (which I know will be popular just after payback) even has a secure app. But the real genius here is Monopoly. I’ll link you to the Here & Now version which helps you fulfil those urges of world domination. One comment says; “the only problem I have encountered with this game is that the computers seem to help each other out a lot” Which made me chuckle. Perhaps the robots are trying to take over a few years early?

Security in your health:

Here are three apps which can help you with the inevitable New Year resolution to get fit and healthy. Personal Coach on Android is an exercise planner with GPS logger which monitors, calculates and saves exercise parameters. miCoach (pictured left) turns your phone into a personal coach and uses GPS and real-time voice coaching (and by coaching I don’t mean derogatory shouting military style) in your ear to pace you through easy to understand workout zones as you run. Finally, WebMD, has their own app on several platforms. My usual motto if your ill is ‘Don’t go near the Internet’, but it’s human nature to find out what could be wrong as fast as possible so you might as well go to a source that has won awards for its work. Translated into meme; ‘Looks Legit’. Disclaimer: These are not a full replacement for actual medical/health advice.

Security for your home:

Today we’re going to talk about ‘Find my iPhone’ and ‘Where’s My Droid’ (Pictured below, the original lost droid) – both of which have saved me many hours on hands and knees around my house and local supermarkets leading most definitely to a call to the police from anxious onlookers. The white noise siren is pretty terrifying on both. Terrifyingly helpful. You can also set how long it rings for. But genuinely, you always read these brilliant stories of iPhones and Droids being found by taking pictures of the culprit – like so (seriously the one link in this article you want to click on), which is why these apps are being recommended even though this section is ‘security for your home’.

Good Evening and happy holidays!
